Standards Collaboration at WIS3 Next Week
Posted by Kshemendra Paul on Thursday, December 1, 2011Next Monday, we are hosting the Workshop on Information Sharing and Safeguarding Standards, or WIS3 (register online), which we also refer to as Standards Palooza. Our goal for the workshop is to advance standards solutions that accelerate government-wide, national, and international responsible information sharing and interoperability.
Mission Partners
Workshops and summits like WIS3 are an important opportunity for our industry partners, who build the tools, information systems, and services that enable responsible information sharing, to meet with our government mission partners, who advance the ISE through their ongoing mission efforts.
For example, the great work by the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office presents an innovative and scalable approach to information sharing through standards. Also, the Defense Common Ground Support Enterprise has advanced one of the primary objectives of the ISE through standards - controlling access to information at the data layer.
Industry-based Standards Partners
We are all committed to voluntary-consensus standards, as they will serve the needs of both the government and the private sector. Much of this year’s WIS3 discussion will be led by international standards development organizations OMG, OGC, OASIS, and of course our NIEM partners. The PM-ISE is working with industry associations who represent those in the private sector who build and operate many of our systems. Specifically, IJIS, AFEI, and ACT/IAC are leaders in bringing ideas and solutions that enable standards-based procurement on the government side.
NIEM UML
This year has seen real progress with NIEM UML, which we championed with OMG and industry partners. Importantly, we are excited and ready to identify the next steps at this year’s WIS3. NIEM UML married the great work done by the NIEM community with an industry standard that enables model-driven architecture, thereby accelerating government-wide and responsible information sharing.
Stay Connected
I look forward to learning more about your ongoing work in standards at WIS3 on December 5th, so I hope you can join us, both at the eventand online by following our tweets on @shareandprotectand through the event hashtag #WIS3.
After the event, help us keep the conversation going about these critical information sharing and safeguarding issues – we’ll be posting summaries and goals from the event on the blog, and we’ll be looking forward to your comments.
